While serving a 57-year sentence, Tommy Wickerd has found purpose in an unexpected way: teaching fellow incarcerated people and corrections officers American Sign Language (ASL) at California’s San Quentin prison. Growing up with a deaf older brother, Wickerd understood better than most the isolation felt by deaf prisoners. Sharing his knowledge of ASL became a way for Wickerd to make amends and create community at the prison.
